Meet the owner

“We treat people like family, as if they’re coming into our home,” says Nick’s Steakhouse and Pizza owner Mark Petros. The Calgary restaurant has kept that commitment to family since his Greek-born father Nick Petros first opened the doors in 1979. It’s one of the city’s oldest and most beloved dining institutions, with generations of families returning for big, beefy steaks and rich, deep crust pizzas.

Mark Petros bought the restaurant from his parents in 2000. He has been working at Nick’s from the beginning, and can remember the early days when the whole family would pitch in, vacuuming the floors and setting the tables, working dawn until dusk. His father Nick has stepped back from running the restaurant, taking on an advisory role, says Mark. On any given day, however, you can still see him, sporting his iconic moustache, greeting guests at the door.

This steakhouse and pizzeria isn’t shy when it comes to desserts. The High Five Chocolate Cake features five layers of rich, chocolate cake topped with – of course – chocolate glaze. The dessert menu also includes a cookies-and-cream cake and mile-high mud pie.

Three cheers for cheesecake in Calgary

Nick’s Steakhouse and Pizza, across from McMahon Stadium in Capital Hill, serves a fabulous house-made cheesecake recipe. In fact, the iconic Calgary eatery has been serving this dessert for over 30 years. Made from scratch, it comes with your choice of blueberry or strawberry topping. Make the cheesecake an after-dinner treat, or just stop in for a tantalizing slice of this special dessert.

It’s been a slice: The best sweet pies in Calgary

Located right near the University of Calgary, Nick’s has been a Calgary dining staple for more than three decades. A popular celebratory destination for university students and families, the restaurant also features a surprisingly pie-centric dessert menu. The frozen peanut butter pie combines the comforting flavours of peanut butter, chocolate and bananas into a super-sized, frozen-ice-cream-like pie. Also try the heaping Mile High Mud Pie.
