“Therapeutic riding is a great way for individuals who have challenges – whether they are physical, social or emotional – to grow,” says Leona Messer, President of Opening Gaits Therapeutic Riding Society of Calgary. “Physically, it strengthens their core and grows motor skills. Socially, our customers interact with their peers and the volunteers. And emotionally, it gives them a sense of accomplishment and confidence.”
Founded in 1998, Opening Gaits has been providing children and adults with disabilities with the opportunity to experience these benefits. “Our horses are amazing,” Leona says. “They come in knowing they are going to work. No matter what challenges our customers face when they’re on the horse, our horses are able to stop and remain calm until the rider is ready to carry on.”
All of the instructors have equine or therapeutic training, and some have both. Opening Gaits also has a host of volunteer opportunities for individuals with a passion for working with people with disabilities and horses. “I really like the direction that the program is going,” Leona smiles.
