Meet the owner

When Danni Garrity met John Tam in Edmonton in 1995, neither was into board games. Yet, two decades later, they would team up with two friends to launch Pips, Calgary’s first board game café.

Danni was born and raised in England, where she studied catering and hospitality before emigrating to Canada to join her mother, brothers and sister. John grew up in Edmonton, pursuing post-secondary education in the sciences, only to later switch to art and design and earn a bachelor in fine arts from the University of Alberta. The pair met at the Earl’s restaurant in Sherwood Park, where both had secured jobs. “Kitchen boy meets waitress,” Danni laughs. “It was very romantic.”

Love this concept! Tried a few other board game cafes but I have to say pips is my favorite. They charge a cover fee rather than charging by hours. They also have really yummy comfort food for you to munch on while you play games with your friends. The place isnt too large and they can get quite busy on the weekend. Which means you can be waiting for hours for a table since a lot of people get carried away with playing games and stays here for hours (including me! hehe). I would recommend coming

For the party after the party, head to Pips Board Game Café at the end of the day for play time at one of the city’s most buzzed about board game cafes. For $5 per person, you can play as many games you want for as long as you want. Choose from the café’s library of more than 500 different board games and chow down of some food and drinks (yes, alcoholic drinks as well) from Pips’ menu. The pretzel loaf is unbelievably good.
