Meet the owner

Calgary has its fair share of Mexican restaurants, but few serve food typically eaten in Mexico. Juan Jose Rivera Santos and his sister Graciela Elizabeth opened the first location of Taqueria El Charrito on Edmonton Trail in 2012 with the aim to give Calgarians a true Mexican fast food experience minus plane fare to Puerta Vallarta.

“We found Canadians really like traditional Mexican food,” says Juan Jose. For the Rivera Santos siblings, proudly showing their regional heritage is paramount. So, patrons are offered homemade dishes from their home state of Jalisco as well as a few Mexican specialty grocery items. This authentic strategy has worked so well, the two opened a second location in Kensington Village in 2014.

This authentic cafeteria-style restaurant serves a hearty selection of Mexican standards from burritos to enchiladas as well as Jalisco regional dishes. Its Edmonton Trail and Kensington Village locations are always busy. The bestselling tacos are made with two types of marinated shredded beef – birria and barbacoa. These magnificent meats have a distinctive flavour all their own and are also used in the restaurant’s soups and burritos.
