Meet the owner

Village Ice Cream opened its first shop in Victoria Park in June 2012. After a slow first year, the business started gaining traction in the summer of 2013. Unfortunately the shop was submerged when the Bow River flooded the city that June, but owner Billy Friley rebuilt the shop and customers flocked to it. In fact, the shop became so popular that Village Ice Cream has since opened two more scoop shops in two of Calgary's most up-and-coming neighbourhoods: Britannia and Marda Loop.

Billy’s mandate is to create delicious ice cream using fresh seasonal and local ingredients: “I love getting back to basics with food,” he says. “I’m not much of a trend guy. You could argue that boutique ice cream is a trend right now but if it is, I think that trend is here to stay.

“Everybody loves ice cream,” he adds. “It’s a really fun business to be in because people always have a smile on their face when they come in. As long as it’s rich, creamy and tasty, our customers are going to be happy.”

No moo for you: Dairy-free ice cream in Calgary

Village Ice Cream’s two locations in Calgary scoop handmade, small-batch, organic ice cream flavours. The boutique ice creamery features a menu of favourite flavours including chocolate, maple pecan, Phil & Sebastian coffee and toasted coconut. Village also rotates through sweet, seasonal selections. Lactose-intolerant and dairy-sensitive patrons can opt for a dairy-free sorbet or dairy-free, coconut-milk ice cream.

Fresh picks for your picnic basket in Calgary

Fresh picks for your picnic basket in Calgary

As soon as the mercury rises into the double digits, it seems like there is a line snaking out the door at all three Village Ice Cream locations. Who can say no to rich, small-batch ice cream with unique flavours like salted caramel and the bestselling cardamom? The cones can get a little messy, so the best bet for a picnic has to be one of the shop’s ice cream sandwiches, or grab a pint and spoons for sharing.

Calgary’s benevolent artisan ice cream king, Billy Friley, has opened a second royally delicious Village Ice Cream location in Britannia Plaza. Friley’s 10 top flavours, from cardamom and Phil & Sebastian coffee to salted caramel and vanilla bean, have proven a year-round draw. Ask the shop’s personable cone jockeys about non-dairy seasonal treats and ice cream sandwiches.
