When Caesar Zmyslowski arrived in Edmonton from Poland in the mid-1990s he brought with him his love of music and a willingness to share it. “When I came here there was not much else I could do,” says Caesar. “I had been a concert performance artist for years. Where I come from, every performing artist also teaches.” Caesar taught at various schools, but wasn’t satisfied with being an employee so he opened his own music school, Caesar’s School of Music, in 1995. “I’d been a trained musician in Europe and it was always my goal to have my own school,” he explains.
Caesar no longer performs as often as he once did, though. “I do benefit concerts sometimes, because you need to perform. It’s like a virus: you can’t get rid of the need to perform,” he says. “But I won’t go back to regular performing.” Though he may miss it at times, Caesar is happy with stepping out of the spotlight because it gives him the opportunity to teach others to be performers, which has become a passion for him.
