Meet the owner

There are many things to love about Italy. Of course, food is on the top of that list. Ken Rubuliak, the manager of Chianti Cafe on Whyte Avenue, agrees. He’s been to Italy many times and the food, a work of art in itself, always keeps him coming back for more. “The ingredients are fresh and many are locally grown. So that affects the taste,” says Ken.

Chianti brings a sample of Italian flavours to lively Whyte Avenue, and its menu caters to many different tastes. Those looking to be inspired by Italy will find it in dishes made with ingredients imported from Italy and purchased at stores like the local Italian Centre. People with a gluten intolerance also have choices of specialty gluten-free dishes. Favourites like the Modigliani — a linguini dish stacked with ingredients such as prawns, cream, scallops, wine, green peas and bright, ripe tomatoes — become more popular on busy Monday and Tuesday nights when pasta dishes are on special.

not impressed...

My wife and I had our wedding reception at Chianti’s. There were 30 people in our party and it was not the best experience. Though it was in the late afternoon on a Saturday (and they weren’t all that busy at the time) we all had the feeling that they were trying to rush us through the dinner; the servers were pressuring us to place our orders even before all of our party had even arrived. And though we did have three different servers for our party, there were times when we had to chase them down. The food itself was fine, but considering we were probably the largest group they would have had all night (and it had all been arranged four months before) we expected better service. What really left a bad taste in our mouths (no pun intended) was, though we did leave a gratuity, as per custom, one of the managers called us at home a couple of days later, on the pretext of asking how everything went, but ultimately to request that we stop in an leave more of a gratuity! Making us sound like cheapskates in spite of the fact that our total tab was over $900 for food and drink and they knew from the get go that we were on a tight budget. I was shocked at the audacity of them essentially saying “though you were nice enough to leave a tip, it wasn’t good enough!” As a result, they have lost our business, and I’ve been a loyal Chianti’s patron for twenty years now. I certainly would not recommend them for larger groups, that’s for sure…

Go on Sunday or Monday for their 6.99 pasta nights. In general the food is slightly above average quality, but consistent (not too many dishes outright suck, some are really good). This food is a bit better than what the average person can make at home, so I'd say go on a Sunday/Monday when you're in the mood for pasta.. can't complain when it's only 7$. What I like most is they have a huge selection.. dishes + sauces I would never have imagined. And they actually work! I could keep return to Chianti's for years and never have tried everything.. so make sure you're feeling adventurous when you go!

Their huge portions of delicious pasta are reasonably priced from the start but if you go on a Monday or Tuesday, every pasta dish is half-off. That means a heaping dish of pasta for about $7. And, unless you are crazy hungry, eating for two, or a giant, you will have enough left over for the next day. Two meals for under $10? How can you possibly top that? Gluten-free pasta will run you a little extra but you can still get the half-off deal.

Speedy lunch options in Edmonton

Speedy lunch options in Edmonton

If you want a hot lunch to stay or go, Chianti’s pasta is to die for — even their gluten-free pasta is amazing. On Mondays and Tuesdays, pasta is half-priced, making it one of the best deals out there. The portions are huge (half-portions are available, and are enough to fill you up), the prices reasonable and the patio is the perfect spot to people watch.
