I was staying in the area and being a fan of Greek food I decided to try it. I realized on entering that it had been featured on the food network for a couple of seasons and was looking forward to my meal. The first thing that struck me was that it felt like entering a cave due to the live vine covered cieling that was falling down to the point of hitting my face as I was being led to my seat. The wait staff were friendly and helpful and overall did a good job. I was struck a bit by sticker shock at $32 for roast lamb that I typically get for about 1/4-1/3 less at many Greek restaurants I frequent. I ordered it anyway as it is a favorite and had high expectations that it would be a great meal. When the food arrived it was a pretty good sized potion that looked like it would feed 2 people. Once I started into the plate it was soon obvious that the bulk was a lot of bones (not a bad thing and expected) but little to no meat. There was a lot of very well cooked fat with some quite dry flesh attached to it. I had the feeling that I was getting lamb that had not been sold the day before and that had been re-heated, not what I expected for the price. The potatoes that were served and always a big part of the typical roast lamb dish also were tough, overcooked and not very flavourful, they too seemed to be re-heated. Overall I was disappointed in the quality of the meal and the surroundings were over the top. The service was good and if they paid more attention to the actual food and less to an old reputation then maybe it would be worth another visit but I doubt it.

Edmonton’s hotspots for hummus

Koutouki Taverna may only be open for dinner in the evenings, but in those few hours a day, they pack in plenty of flavourful Greek cuisine dining experiences. The restaurant looks like it’s been plucked right off a Mediterranean coastline, with its classic architecture and iconic blue and white palettes, and the food has that same authentic look (and taste), as well. Although Koutouki only has one hummus option (the classic chickpea and tahini dip with pita bread), the price and flavour of the appetizer still make Koutouki a great destination in the search for delectable hummus.
