Heights Laser Centre

“If the eyes are the windows to the soul, then the skin is the window to the body.” So says Dr. Jaffer, owner of The Heights Laser Centre in Burnaby.

Dr. Jaffer has been a family doctor since 1991 and over the years has developed a fascination for that all-encompassing organ, the skin. During his medical training he enjoyed working with skin, so in 2004 he opened the laser centre to provide safe, non-surgical, cosmetic procedures. “It allowed me to expand on that interest," explains Dr. Jaffer. "I’m doing something that I really like to do.”

What is it about skin work that captured the doctor’s attention? “Number 1, it’s very visual, which I like,” he says. “You have to really look at things and visualize what’s happening on the skin, and underneath the skin. Number 2, because a lot of diseases have skin manifestations, you have to know a lot of medicine as well. So it was very intriguing for me.”

It's a learning process that never ends; there are always new discoveries and procedures to study. But there’s another side to it as well. As Dr. Jaffer puts it, “It’s also an art; it’s all about symmetry and proportion, and if you don’t have an eye for it, it it can be really difficult!” Luckily, he has an eye for it.
