Meet the owner

The regulars gush about the place. They tell their friends to venture over to the northwest corner of St. George and 28th Avenue, where they’ll find the loveliest café-general store. It’s French-inspired with lovely food products, freshly baked pastries and quiches and crepes on offer. And it’s stunningly beautiful, styled with a careful and skilled hand. On the shelves, handmade ceramics are displayed alongside dish soap and fancy bitters. It’s called Le Marché St. George.

In 2010, Janaki Larsen and Pascal Roy bought a weathered 1904 Vancouver building with four suites in “the middle of nowhere.” One of the suites had a license for a neighbourhood grocery store, and Janaki and Pascal had visions of opening their own café in the building. At first, “People thought we were absolutely crazy,” says Pascal. But ultimately, he gently boasts, “we’ve proven them wrong.” The neighbourhood embraced the café immediately, and today Le Marché teems with young families, curious tourists and food and coffee lovers.

The second café on this list to serve To Die For Banana Bread, Le Marche St George is an intimate location to enjoy the popular North American loaf amidst French bohemian decor, whimsical and lovely staff (with even lovelier accents) and a vibrant community of local regulars. Tip: order the treat for dessert after a perfect lunch of quiche, crepe or arugula salad from the café’s daily chalkboard menu.

Great breakfast places for granola in Vancouver

This beloved community hub in Riley Park looks as though it could have been lifted out of the pages of Kinfolk. Part corner store, part café, Le Marche St. George is a local favourite thanks to its curated selection of gourmet pantry products, artisan-made lifestyle goods (cozy textiles, ceramics, apothecary items), and its delicious food and beverage offerings. Known for its sweet and savoury crepes, the daytime menu also features a healthful granola bowl served with Birchwood Dairy yogurt and house-made fruit compote. Well-worn vintage furnishings and a laid-back seat-yourself policy make this cozy neighbourhood spot feel just like home.

50 must-try brunch destinations in Vancouver

50 must-try brunch destinations in Vancouver

How did a corner store on a quiet residential street become one of Vancouver’s hottest dining destinations? Simple: beautifully prepared crepes, creamy latte bowls and a laid-back European ambiance. Part lifestyle boutique; part dining room, the quaint interior seems lifted straight out of the pages of Kinfolk. Shelves are lined with an eclectic selection of artisanal giftware (ceramics, blankets, apothecary items) displayed alongside gourmet groceries. The kitchen serves a simple-yet-delicious array of French café fare: croissants, daily quiches and the aforementioned sweet and savoury crepes available in both regular and gluten-free varieties. Seating is at a premium so arrive early.
