Located on English Bay just steps from Stanley Park, The Sylvia Hotel has attracted tourists for more than 100 years with its stunning and affordable rooms, romantic fixtures – including a Virginia Creeper climbing vine covering the exterior wall – and warm, approachable staff, whose relationships with guests extend as far back as the hotel’s beginnings.

“We are a heritage site and proud to stay true to our heritage,” says general manager Ross Dyck of the hotel, which first opened in 1912. He goes on to explain that some families have been coming to the hotel for three or four generations. And from day one, "all have felt that The Sylvia is home away from home,” he continues.

In keeping with its home-like atmosphere, the brick and terra-cotta hotel – designed by Seattle architect W.P. White – offers 120 comfortable rooms including family suites; a restaurant, patio and lounge; and easy access to the Seawall, as well as kayaking, swimming, cycling, tennis and sunbathing at nearby Stanley Park.

“We have a fantastic location,” says Ross of the hotel’s main attraction, Vancouver’s West End, where mountains, beaches and forests make for stunning backdrops to any vacation or business excursion.

Fall in love with summer on Vancouver’s best patios

Fall in love with summer on Vancouver’s best patios

In many ways the antithesis to Cactus Club’ modern, sleek aesthetic, The Sylvia Hotel is a staple of the West End and a go-to spot for locals to watch the waves coming ashore. Like a beloved family meal, the Sylvia is unfussy but heartwarming. Don’t expect fanfare cuisine; do expect casual dining staples, friendly service, beautiful views and the chance to experience a Vancouver tradition.

Where to eat and drink near Vancouver beaches

Where to eat and drink near Vancouver beaches

The ivy-covered Sylvia Hotel is a beloved sight in the West End. Built in 1912, the iconic hotel is one of Vancouver’s heritage jewels; in fact, some of the original Art Deco finishes can still be admired today. For a truly Vancouver experience, take a stroll or bike ride along the Seawall and retire to Sylvia’s onsite restaurant, which offers a formal dining room as well as a more casual lounge and an outdoor patio. Breakfast, lunch and dinner options are available and almost every seat offers a stunning view overlooking English Bay.

Ring in 2017 with a New Year’s Day brunch in Vancouver

Ring in 2017 with a New Year’s Day brunch in Vancouver

If you’re planning on submerging into the icy waters at English Bay during Vancouver’s annual Polar Bear dip, warm up by the fire afterwards at the Sylvia Hotel. In a nod to the annual New Year’s Day tradition, Sylvia’s is hosting a special Polar Dip brunch: $28 gets you an entrée, coffee or tea, a mimosa, and pastries for the table. In keeping with the restaurant’s seaside locale, the menu features plenty of West Coast seafood, (salmon omelette, crab cake Benny, goat cheese frittata with shrimp) and a hearty bacon-and-egg-topped burger designed to thaw out freezing bones.
