Premium Price Without The Service

We decided to give this place at try since we live 5 min away. Walked in and were told that they were full and only tables available would be next to the bar. Well, okay it's a Friday night and we did not reserve so we said okay (mind you there were many tables free without reservation signs). Sat for 20 min before anyone even acknowledged that we were there to dine. Ordered appetizers and main dishes. Appertizer took over 20 min to be delivered (and that was for an order of Papadam which takes 1 min tops to prepare). Ordered the Pinapple fried rice and it was nothing like what was described on the menu. When I asked the waiter why it wasn't served in a pinapple as described on the menu, he just shrugged his shoulders and said that's the dish. Once I dug in I noticed that there were zero cashews (which was described in the menu). Unfortunately I could not complain to the waiter as he disappeared into the kitchen for 30 min. Nobody ever came to ask how the meal was. Finally saw the waiter and sked for the bill and mentioned that the rice was nothing like what was described in the menu. And at this point the waiter being worried about his tip asked if I wanted to talk to the manager. Honestly, what's the point after my meal. In short, I have nothing against paying premium prices for good food, the right decor and decent service. In the case of Avani, their staff should be trained about attending to customers rather than hiding in the kitchen to socialize with each other. This place could learn from the kids at McDonalds about customer service. Folks this place does not deserve your time or money as they don't seem to appreciate the value of a customer.

Opening statement - "Not worth it!!" Food was just ok. We ordered romali roti($5??? For one). The portions were very small and the taste was not great at all. We also ordered chicken platter; the chiken had a strong ginger flavour- meaning the marination was still raw!!!! What's worse, we were still working on it and the waitress swiftly took it away without the courtesy of asking. We felt quite embarassed to call her! The only item we liked was the egg fried rice - again the quantity was small. My opinion is if it is Indian cuisine then the taste, quantity and price has to be equally managed. I think Avani is priced high for the quality and quantity. I won't be going their anytime in the near future.

First and Last time at Avani's!!!

Heard about this restaurant for a while and decided to take the family to it. Well, in a nutshell, NOT WORTH THE PREMIUM PRICE FOR THE FOOD!!! The food is your typical indian style flavour that can be had at any Indian restaurant and the portions are very small. For starters you better make a reservation on a Saturday night or you're not getting seated immediately. When we sat down, we were greated immediately. We ordered our drinks ($6 for virgin pina colada's and Margarita's!!) and then placed our order. At first we decided to skip the appetizers. The waitress warned us that it may take up to 40 minutes for the food to arrive so we ordered the Kebob Combo as an appetizer ($24 Definitely not worth the $$$) which arrived in a standard oval shaped hotplate. For dinner we ordered 1 each of the following: Methi Malai Mutter ($14 - Not bad tasting dish but very very very heavy); Paneer Vindaloo ($13 and definitely not vindaloo, more like Shahee Paneer); Chicken Tikka Masala ($13, typical CTM but not worth the $$$); Methi Lamb ($16; not bad of a dish so maybe it was worth the $$); Hakka fried noodles ($10; horrible, just down right horrible): Vegetable Biriyani ($11; the wife said that it was ok, but I didn't like it) Butter Naans ($2.50 each; very tastey and well cooked) and Lachedar Paratha ($3.00 each; again very tastey and well cooked). Other than the Methi Lamb and the Methi Mali Mutter, everything else we ordered was a typical Indian dish that can be had at pretty much any indian restuarant but this one came at a premium price. How this restaruant hasn't priced itself out of the market, is beyond me. I could have ordered the same food elsewhere at almost 1/2 of what I paid and that was $190 (incl.$25 tip). So like I said in my opening sentence, this place is not worth the money.

We actually had 6 adults and two toddlers. I've taken my one year old out to eat plenty of times at restaurants. She is usually pretty good, and I pack items to keep her amused. But we had to wait 40 minutes for food... it was hard. We came for lunch, and knew that it would be buffet. I thought we'd get up, I'd get my daughter rice & yogurt and other things if the curries were too spicey. We learned that the buffet was brough to our table. It was as if they didn't plan on having a buffet, but due to popular demand, they make it work. Poor waitress ran and ran back and forth. She brought us 6 chicken wings and 3 samosa rolls cut in half. I ordered a mango lassi, and the yogurt was off. I asked for kid options since everything brought to us was too spicey for my daughter and I wasn't going to give her yogurt since my lassi was bad. And rice is boring. We were offered French fries or naan. So I ordered a Roti with now butter (thinking it was a healthier option and she likes it at home and at her daddys restaurant). It was still doughy. She choked on it. It was a horrible meal. Horrible Experience. Will never go back, or recommend it. Even with the nice write up in the Star, I was very disappointed.

The ambience was cold and unfeeling. Very dark and gloomy with the black table cloths and napkins. Unfortunately the food wasnt any better. The menu is very expansive, but in an attempt to be a master in a variety of cuisines, Avani falls short in quality. Food was over cooked and to heavily. spiced. The waiter wasnt too knowledgeable about the menu when asked about recommendations. Overall, very disappointing. I believe there are far better Indian restaurants to dine in Mississauga.
