The rolls are to die for! I had the 3 meat cannelloni but found the pasta too thick & tough and the meat filling was too chunky. They added far too much tomato sauce to the dish. My friend had the Chicken Marsala and was pleased with that entree - chicken was moist and veggies firm. The dish looked quite lovely. We finished off our meal with the traditional Tiramisu which was quite tasty but quite a small serving.

restaurant for people who don't know about Italian cuisine

What is the purpose to go to a restaurant? Of course to eat delicious food is the first motivation. I have to admit, that Zolas did a good job designing their website. It looks pretty inviting to me. So I decided to go there with my wife. The interior decoration in Zolas looks attractive and modern. Their kitchen is half open like in those fusion restaurants. But when you get closer to watch those decoration, materials seem to be cheap and crude. But that is not the point, after all, you expect to taste the "modern" Italian cuisine. I ordered pasta primavera as I usually would not order some fancy stuff in my first visit to a restaurant. And this is the pasta you can hardly screw up. But to my surprise, it did not impress me at all. The pasta was not well boiled, the inner part was still hard. They put too much olive oil and seasoning, which made the pasta smelled good, but tasted oily and tedious. I felt as if I was eating the plain boiled pasta after I dipped them in the sauce, not a complete mixture of a fine cuisine cooked with the matching sauces. My wife ordered Portabello Frocaccia, and it was over grilled and a little burnt so she didn't even finish half of it. I love to cook and I lived and worked in Europe for years. I am confident to say, I cook better Primavera than this so called "modern" Italian restaurant. The waitress looked nice, but when you asked for a replacement of a fork, it took ages. The price was ok, not expensive, but not cheap either. Well, I thought it would had been my last visit there. I talked with my friend who was there before, she had the same "poor cooking" comment. But she thought dinner time, the atmosphere was romantic and mysterious, and music was not bad there. But to me, no matter how trendy and stylish it looks, how nice music you can listen to there, it is a restaurant, not a entertaining room or tavern. If the food cannot reach the standard, the service is so-so, the price doesn't seem to be more competitive than any other small restaurants. Why do I have to go there again? Fairwell, Zolas!

Decided to try Zola's breakfast again...it was excellent. I had breakfast several months previously and did not find it very good. However this visit was excellent. I had the breakfast special...two eggs over easy with sausage and homefries. The eggs and sausage were very good. The home fries are at least equal to any I have tasted in the city. breakfast come with a fabulous fresh fruit cup and a rosemary spiced grilled tomatoe and great artisan ancient grain bread. I have finally found my breakfast place of choice. No need to go elsewhere best breakfast in the city.

Good Breakfast

Decided to stop in for Breakfast on a Sunday. It was around 10am and only two other tables occupied. Can be a bad sign but we were pleasantly surprised. It smelled like fresh bread baking. We both had the eggs benedict -medium poach-this is the only place that has gotten it perfectly done. A runny egg white can be off putting. It came with a grilled tomato, small fruit salad and a small amount of real home fries(plenty for us girls, a bigger appetite maybe not) I wasn't impressed with the addition of mint(or basil) in the fruit salad as it had darkened and was hard to identify but I ate it all. Service was attentive with coffee refills and the orange juice was only $1.50.

I haven't been to Zolas in almost a year and was invited for a holiday get together and I must say it was amazing. Our waitress had the greatest smile and couldn't do enough for us. I started with the coconut shrimp app, they were beautifully cooked and nicely presented. For a main course I had grilled salmon with a side of pasta, the fish was cooked to pefection and plated nicely. I am sooo addicted to their dinner rolls, I think I ate 4 of them so t here was no room for desert. It was a fantastic evening with good friends, great food and incredible service (I sound like a cheesy restaurant commercial)

I haven't been to Zolas in a few years and was very happy to return. I did remember their dinner rolls as they are addictive. I had a shrimp appitizer and my husband had soup, both were great. For the main course we both had a grilled sea bass special. Both were flaky and well cooked. They were served with steamed veggies. The waitress was friendly and chose a wonderful charaz for us that went very well with the meal. It is a little pricey for our budget but for a special occasion certainly is worth while.

Place to avoid!

Not a restaurant that I will visit again soon. Started with a bland butternut squash soup, then I ordered one of their specialties: Chicken gorgon"Zola". The roasted potatoes were burnt, the chicken was undercooked and the sauce was not edible. I was so disappointed with the first two courses, I didn't bother ordering dessert. If you end up having to visit this restaurant, make sure to avoid the washrooms; port-o-potty's smell better than the ones here. I do have to say that although the food was horrible the service was great.

Poor Service, poor value

We went to Zola's looking for a gluten-free alternative for the member of our party suffering from Celiac Disease. She close the Veal Parmegiana and substituted potatoes and veggies for the spaghetti. Her meal was particulariy maegre, a thin little piece of veal, very few potatoes and WAY TOO MANY SWEET PEPPERS in the vegetables. We found all the mals to be Underwhelming and Overpriced. Sertvice was attrocious. The server was very slow and not very helpful. Two meals came about 5 minutes before the pizza. The last meal (on which she had made a mistake) came about 10 minutes after that. The first two peole were finished eating by then...mind you, there wasn't much to eat once you pulled away all the swet peppers! Gelato was not Gelato, it was sherbet - flavoured ice.

The trouble was that the salmon was overcooked -- and always is, so for that reason I rarely go there. Rolls are the best in Ottawa. My suggestion? Get takeout -- the pasta is fresh, sauces are good, and more of those lovely rolls. The Greek salad is good too,

We went to Zola's for dinner last night with...

We went to Zola's for dinner last night with friends and in the end, we thought it was 'just ok'. The red wine was warmer than it should have been, two of us had pasta and the general opinion was that the pasta dishes were kind of flavourless. My chicken parmigiano had very little tomato sauce/cheese on it and as it wasn't breaded the flavour was minimal at best. I got fettucini alfredo with it and the sauce was very watery and not rich tasting at all (also pretty flavourless). My friend who also had pasta found that her dish was also lacking in flavour (lots of salt, pepper and parmesan cheese added). The others with us had pizza and a calzone and both enjoyed their meals. On the plus side, our server was really nice and pretty attentive...until the end of the meal. We waited quite awhile to get our bill. One other thing to mention, the dinner rolls are made fresh everyday and they were really good. So we probably won't go to this restaurant again, but if you do go, the general consensus is that the pasta isn't very good, but the pizza is.
