Meet the owner

Anna Tvinnereim took ownership of Beaches Bakeshop & Café in 2007 and has since redesigned the space into an authentic Swedish café in the heart of Toronto’s east end. This is the type of place you curl up with a tea and a newspaper to hide from the world after a long day. Anna has been a cook and a baker for as long as she’s been in North America — about 20 years. When she wasn’t cooking or baking herself, she was teaching other people how to do the same.

The charming bakeshop is decorated in true Swedish style; the warm ambience is accented with quirky comics, colourful clogs and soothing folk music playing on the radio in the background. The homey Scandinavian style is something that sets it apart from other cafés  in the neighbourhood.

Owner Anna Tvinnereim wants her love of food, community and friendship to shine through in everything the bakeshop does. Having studied nutrition, Anna creates Scandinavian-inspired options that are healthy and delicious. These take-away suggestions are perfect for picnicking at the beach. Choose from quiches, quinoa salads, soups and more. You can also balance out your nutritious meal with a mouth-watering Swedish cinnamon bun – in Toronto these are some of the most authentic rolls around.

East end locals stop in for “fika” at this charming Swedish café and bakeshop in the Upper Beaches. Owner Anna Tvinnereim can be found in the open kitchen preparing light meals and baked goods using traditional family recipes. Nyponsoppa is a unique dessert soup made with rose hips while the authentic Swedish cinnamon buns get an extra little spice thanks to a dash of cardamom in the dough. The homey shop interior is also decorated in true Scandinavian style with colourful clogs and soothing folk music playing on the radio.
