Great food, but leave your birthday cake at home!

I've been to this restaurant twice now and both times the food has been great. But I was there with my husband's family last night for my father-in-law's birthday. My mother-in-law had brought a birthday cake to the restaurant and had asked them to bring it out as a surprise when it was time for dessert. Everything was going great until the server informed my mother-in-law (just before they were about to bring his birthday cake out) that we would be charged $10 just for them to bring it out! We said forget it, and we took the cake home and had it there! We would have ordered coffees and cafe au laits to go with the cake, so they certainly would have made at least another $20 off of that, but it's their loss I guess. So to summarize, the food was excellent as usual, but we were very disappointed that they wouldn't accommodate our birthday cake with out a steep charge - it left a bad taste in our mouth.

"Favourite Polish Restaurant"

Great authentic Polish home style comfort food, generous portions, reasonable price in a very clean place. Desert menu could use some more choices, but then again who has room after the great food. Potato pancakes with Goulash is my personal favourite. You won't be disappointed !

THE BEST SOUPS IN THE CITY!!! Polish soups are...

THE BEST SOUPS IN THE CITY!!! Polish soups are great and the daily specials at Cafe Polonez always include a soup OR TWO of the day. Delicious and always homemade! Excellent cabbage rolls – a perfect blend of rice and meat, wrapped in cabbage leaf and topped with tomato sauce. A Polish classic done right! There’s a dish which includes a large potato pancake served with goulash. TO DIE FOR. This is the only thing my husband ever wants. I believe it’s called Hungarian style but I might be wrong. The hunter stew uses top notch kielbasa mixed in with shredded sauerkraut. It has a wonderful hardy, early flavour and will definitely fill anyone’s craving for traditional Polish fare. The hunter stew, as well as most other dishes on the menu, are available in half-sizes. Not many restaurants do this. It’s a great option!!! - especially for people trying Polish food for the first time and want to try a variety of items… or simply for smaller appetites. The pierogi (one of the staples of Polish food) are very well done. So much so, in fact, that I believe they freeze them and supply them to local delis and supermarkets around the city. I also enjoy the nalesniki (crepes served with your chose of cheese or fruit filling). A nice option for a main or a dessert. Finally, drinks! Cafe Polonez offers a wide variety of delicious polish beers. Zywiec, Okocim, Lech, Tyskie, etc. They also make their own traditional compote drink. It’s a fruit and water concoction that’s boiled in a pot with maybe some honey? I’m not sure. It’s very soothing. Usually served chilled but I’m sure you can ask for it heated if you prefer. It’s non-alcoholic, by the way. Service is always very cheery and servers speak both Polish and English. Décor is simple and casual but always clean and well kept. The owners sometimes shut down after Christmas/New Years for a few weeks so call ahead if you plan on going around then.

Toronto, feast through seven countries in seven nights

Toronto, feast through seven countries in seven nights

You'll find this Polish gem in the centre of Toronto's Polish community. Meals, made fresh daily, are offered at reasonable prices. For those chillier days, order zupa gulaszowa, a hearty beef stew. If you're looking for a lighter meal, they have plenty of sandwiches, salads and perogies. If you opt for a Polish classic main course, you most certainly won't leave hungry.
