Great fish and chips - an neighborhood institution that my family has been going to for many years. Friendly staff and quick service!
I was a bit dissapointed because i heard great reviews about this fish and chip shop. It was not what i expected because the halibut was good ,but way to small for what i paid it was the size of a tennis ball. The chips was the best thing i enjoyed.
Been several years since I been to Duckworth's. What a disappointment. Dirty, grungy, wonder when they cleaned the fryers last. Washroom smelled awful. Prices have gone through the roof. Thirty bucks for 2 orders plus one extra fish. Ridiculous. Waitresses look like they just crawled out of bed. The whole place..dirty, run down. Whole neighbourhood's a sewer.
I like to visit a lot of Fish and Chip shops in Toronto, maybe even some day i will write a book about the best ones. Duckworths is solid, lots of seating, good service and good food. I like the special with halibut and chips, bread and butter and soft drink. Halibut is nice and crispy, chips crisp and hand cut. Good stuff.
Duckworth's has been a fixture on the Danforth for longer than I care to remember and they USED to be the best for "traditional type" fish and chips. The service for both take out and eat in has always been quite fast (even when they are at their busiest). The last few times we've been in there though we've noticed that the quality/quantity of their food has declined somewhat. We haven't been able to get the Orange Roughy (I know this isn't their fault as it is a supply issue) so we've ordered Halibut or Haddock and the pieces of fish have been quite small and seem to be almost uniform "chunks" of fish. Their chips have suffered as well and we seemed to get plates full of teeny, tiny chip "ends" rather than their lovely, big, fat golden fries of yesteryear. Their cole slaw is probably the best I've ever had though and reminds me of how my mother used to make it!
The fish is always fresh, beautifully battered and cooked to perfection. THe chips are - without a doubt - THE BEST CHIPS IN TORONTO! Wow they are flavourful and not overly greasy. Get some fresh bread and butter as a side. The platter includes a couple of scallops and couple of Shrimp. Service is friendly and fast. The old-style booths are a little worn - some are torn and need upgrading. But for Fish & Chips this is teh best place around. Washrooms are in the basement and while acceptable not pleasant. Good in a pinch but if you can wait, do so.
Our family has been going to Duckworths since its' inception. My parents grew up in the Danforth neighborhood on Coleridge Ave. I travel from Lewiston NY to go there once a year for a fix and some childhood nostalgia. The same mounted fish hang on the walls. The only thing I really miss is the ole' fashioned metal pop cooler inthe middle of the floor. I drove there in a snowstorm when I was pregnant with my daughter because my craving was insatiable. Luckily Duckworths was able to satisfy my pregnant needs!!!
Excellent fish & chips. Bathroom was disgusting/basement reeked.
i've always loved duckworths and i'll tell anyone its the best you will ever get. There is never a thing wrong with your meal. The staff is amazing and the food....mmmm the food. If anyone still hasn't tried it stop reading and go..you will not regret it.
Best fish and chips in toronto! I would recommend to everybody. Most fish and chips are dry but it is amazing. Must visit again!!!!
I have been going to "Duckies"(as I used to call it) Since before I can remember. The chips are the best I've ever had, and even though I dont really like fish, it's pretty good. The staff are very friendly and so is everyone there. The only bad thing is, the basement smells really, really bad. If you go there, try not to use the bathroom. Other than that, it's one of my favourite restaurants.
YUMMY! It's the best fish I've ever had. The fries are only good if you put mult vinegar on them. The one at Kingston Road and Midland is better than the one at Danforth and Main. The one at danforth/Main always has this really gross smell in it and the fish is usually dry. Make sure you eat at the one at Kingston road and Midland
These are the best chips I've found in Toronto so far, and I've been to most of the well know fish and chip shops in my 3 years since moving from England. For the fish, the batter was crispy and light, the fish moist with chunky flakes. Again, one of the best I've tried here. The restaurant itself has definately a 'greasy spoon' kind of atmosphere; they could play on it's history a bit more to give it more ambience. But if it works, and they like it that way, don't fix it I guess!
Simply put,,they are great ! The best fish and chips in the area.. My husband constantly searches for a good one since he is originally from England and was constantly on the hunt for a good "chippy" Len Duckworths is it.
Great fish & chips, friendly staff. Nice to see there are still a few Canadian restaurants left in Toronto! Highly recommend Duckworth's!
The chips were quite good. Unfortunately, i forgot to salt them. Yeah, that's an issue. You have to salt chips within a few minutes of getting them out of the fryer to do a proper job, and these guys don't automatically salt the chips. My bad. The batter was light, the fish was good. Here's the thing: I was doing take out and chatted up the cook a bit - about the history of the place, the fish, etc. I asked him about the Orange Roughy that was on the menu. He must have liked the cut of my jib or my Nova Scotian accent because he fried me up a piece at no charge and tossed it in. Friendly and tasty. One of the best fish and chip shops in the city. Now, off to Penrose...
The food is pretty good, but don't bring anybody who doesn't eat fish as there's nothing else on the menu -except chips. Try not to use the washrooms if you can wait. Or go across to the Canadian Tire. The outside of the building looks quite nice but inside it's a real greasy spoon. still, it's the best fish and chips place in the area so I'll probably go back.
