Nestled in the heart of Little Italy in Toronto, the Original San Francesco Foods opened up shop in 1954 and has been a family favourite ever since. The eatery is home to Toronto’s best veal sandwich; not to mention the tender meat, scrumptious sauces, fresh Italian baked breads and an assortment of cheeses and vegetables available here.

Topping many people's lists of must-try places when deciding where to dine, San Francesco Foods is one of Toronto's top choices for local Italian style food. Having been around for so many years, Torontonians and visitors alike have grown to love this fixture on Clinton Street, and many families pass their love for it down through the generations.

“Our food is really iconic and we have been voted one of the best veal places in Toronto,” says Sean Sarrami, Director of Operations. “Everyone knows, if you come to Toronto and haven’t been to San Francesco’s you haven’t had a taste of what the city has to offer. When we took over San Francescos from the original family, we were really getting a piece of history."

San Francesco recently added a store on Queen West near Bathurst, but the original on Clinton Street has been a Little Italy fixture for more than 60 years. My parents used to buy their signature sandwiches there and then eat them at the neighbouring bar. There’s a full list of meats and vegetables, but the veal with eggplant and hot peppers wins every time. Be advised: the sandwiches are huge, so you probably won’t need much else.

They haven’t moved from Clinton and College since they opened in 1954, but now they also showcase their food at the CNE, Royal Winter Fair and other local events. Vegetarians have plenty to choose from on the sandwich menu, with either mixed veggie or eggplant, topped with a variety of grilled options including zucchini, mushrooms, onions, jalapeños and more. You can’t beat the flavour or the price.
