Meet the owner

When Barry Silver took over Yitz’s in 2000, the Jewish delicatessen had already built up a reputation for homemade comfort food since opening its doors on Eglinton West in 1972. “There was a 20-plus history — people knowing Yitz’s, knowing what it stood for, knowing the quality,” Barry says.

Though his family was in the food business, Barry worked in film and theatre before he decided to make the move to the restaurant industry. “I’d eaten there once or twice and I approached the owner and asked if he wanted to sell his business,” he recalls. “It was easy in that regard.”

Yitz's Deli menu for kids not only includes fun dishes, items are written across a cartoon-filled page that the kids can colour. The menu is for kids 10 and under, and all items are just $5.55. Youngsters can select from wide-ranging dishes such as Weiner & Baked Beans, Bagel & Cream Cheese and Corned Beef Sandwich Fries. The real bonus? All meals come complete with a chunky chocolate chip cookie for dessert, so you won't have to stop for anything sweet on the way home.

A guide to the best restaurants around Yonge and Eglinton

A guide to the best restaurants around Yonge and Eglinton

When a craving for fries, dill pickles and a Montreal smoked meat sandwich strikes, hit up one of Toronto’s most authentic old-school Jewish delis. Since 1972, this Eglinton gem has been supplying its customers with the ultimate comfort food (chicken matzo ball soup, bagels with lox and cream cheese and stuffed cabbage rolls, to name a few). Get your grub to-go or opt for a straight-up diner experience with plenty of traditional deli fare and housemade specialties like as the meat loaf (available in turkey and veggie option too!) served with hot sides of mashed potatoes and vegetables.
