Sorry for all you guys who don't like it. The chains stores don't care if you don't come back ....Sonny's does..if you like good old fashion taste and service this is the place. If you don't the rest of us don't care if you are in the line again!
Sory i hate giving any body a bad review but Fries were terrible and startchy the gravy was a watery slury that was discolored with part of it a light milky colore and the rest of it was like light colored hot chocolate looking and the bun for my chicken sandwich was a crapy lil tiny wonder bread hamburgwr bun. Room for improvment like big time.
Sonny's is an institution in Waterloo. We have gone there for years as a family when I was growing up, and now I go with my husband when we want fish and chips. Staff are friendly. The chips are fresh. The fish is the perfect texture and always hot. Sometimes I find the batter too heavy (my only complaint). Service is quick. Good, basic takeout.
In my visit again question. I answered yes but only if the present owner would sell me Sonny's; then I could renovate and turn Sonny's into the likes of Peter's Drive-in from Calgary Ab. Peter's sells thousands of hamburgers and is always busy. Anyway I had frozen fries and a frozen soy hockey puck char-broiled to a midnight black appearance when I first visited Sonny's. Sonny's is an icon. A great location but It's product line up needs an overhaul. Where's chef Ramsay. Don't get me wrong I'm sure some people still love this type of food and I have sampled other take-outs with fantastic burgers. I just think Sonny's could do better inline with it's landmark heritage. I think people return just to say I went to Sonny's or that it's conveniently located. I wish for a better product, that's all.
Good burgers, onion rings and fries. It's a drive in place, on a busy road, so not a lot of atmosphere but if you are looking for some good, old fashioned burgers and fries, this is one of K-W's best spots.
I ordered fish and chips. There were only two people ahead of me in line, but the service was brutally slow.
I got my food to-go, and when I got back to work (on lunch break) to eat it, I found a long, curly black hair in my french fries. I literally gagged.
I called them to let them know, and they did not seem to care, nor did they offer me any compensation for my inedible meal.
I will never go back.

Such good comfort food. Best place in Waterloo to get a Hamburger. Thought the onion rings were also the best i've ever had. The location could use a bit of updating though, mainly more seating but overall not bad. The only thing is that they only take cash... so for a couple who never carries cash we always need to make a stop at the bank beforehand. Staff is always very friendly even at the busiest of times. Will be returning for many years to come and hope to take my children here one day.

I've been visiting Sonny's with my father for the past 20 years and he'd been eating there for about 20 year prior to that. I've never been disappointed, the food is always excellent, the owner is great, he's always remembered me even if I hadn't been in for a year. The milkshakes are amazing, the fries are the best in town, the burgers are among the best and, I mean, what beats all that plus a game of arcade style Pac-man while you wait?

Had a craving for hot dogs and thought we'd give this place a try. I'd heard it has been around for years, so they must be doing something right, right?
Well... the food was nothing spectacular, the staff wasn't very friendly, and the place looked pretty dirty. I was very unimpressed, especially for how expensive it was.
I won't be going back.

Best burger AND fries for fast food anywhere in K/W. The burgers are grilled and The French fries taste like they came from a Chip Wagon.
I have seen reviews that it's run down, but the place has been there forever...you go to fast food for the food, who cares about the rest!
Service is fast, but the workers are never that friendly...but again, who cares!
After ordering, I saw one of the workers make fresh onion rings (battered just before frying), and they were the biggest I've ever seen! Gotta try that next time!
So if your ever in the mood for late night deep fried goodness....go to Sonny's!
Awesome food. Service is O.K. Grounds could be kept a little tidier, especially since people are eating out there. I would recommend Sonnys based on the food.
