In order for a business to survive, it must be able to adapt. This rings especially true for a family business which spans across generations. Adaptability is one reason Sam Tabak has remained relevant in Lachine since 1942. The clothing store has always carried a wide range of apparel, but back when it opened, it was known for its tailored suits. Around the turn of the century, third-generation owner Eli Tabak made the choice to offer more sportswear and casual clothing, bringing in brands like Nike, Adidas and Vans. “When we started, tailored suits were upstairs and sportswear clothing was downstairs,” says Marketing Manager Devan Pelletier. “Eventually, it grew to the whole store being centred on sportswear.”

Sam Tabak is located in a historic part of Montreal, which isn’t lost on the staff and customers who shop there. “We’re located in Notre-Dame. There’s nothing on the street anymore compared to 30 or 40 years ago,” explains Devan. “We’re considered a destination shop. The only reason people come on the street is to come here.” Eli takes it seriously too. He is a hands-on owner who regularly meets and greets shoppers and works the till alongside his employees.
