Meet the owner

Matthew Schnarch worked for many years in the restaurant business, so there is little the chef does not know about the industry. However, Matthew hasn't always been a restaurateur; he started out in education, but the environment was too stressful and demanding. "I loved to cook. I tried it and I liked it," says Matthew, who has worked for a number of seasoned chefs who have greatly helped him to perfect his art.

After his first son was born, Matthew decided he wanted more control over his time. He worked as a caterer for a while, but the job was impersonal and repetitive. Matthew's dream was to work in  place where he could  interact with people. In 2011, he found the ideal premises at 243 Notre-Dame Street West, and finally embarked on his adventure by opening Café Pavé. It also gave him the opportunity to work only during the day, something he had always desired.

Take a bite out of these crazy good sandwiches in Montreal

Take a bite out of these crazy good sandwiches in Montreal

This is another Old Montreal original located on Notre-Dame West, not far from the Basilica. A favourite among regulars is pulled pork on a baguette with an artichoke and spinach spread, topped with Monterey cheese. Montreal boasts outstanding Italian fare, and Café Pavé also has the goods. The pesto-flavoured chicken and prosciutto Genova sandwich stands up to the best of them, and there's even a gluten-free variation.

A daytime-only sandwiches “and more” joint in Old Montreal, this popular lunch spot also serves salads and killer pizzas. Sometimes they run out of pizza dough, but fret not; ask for your pie made with naan bread instead. You won’t regret it.

A daytime-only sandwiches “and more” joint in Old Montreal, this popular lunch spot also serves salads and killer pizzas. The focus here is on sourcing and quality ingredients; try the Buenos Aires steak sandwich or the Buffalo chicken sandwich for a good lunch fix.
