Meet the owner

L'Escalier is hidden away a few steps from UQAM. Located on the second floor, this former apartment distinguishes itself by each day discovering new artists and cultures.

There have been many cafés located at 522 Sainte-Catherine Street east; the Ludik, created by the founders of the Divan orange and then Utopik. While the owner of Utopik had wanted to invest in the whole block and open a grocery store, restaurant and other outlets, he ended up going bankrupt. That’s when the employees of Utopik decided to take the initiative and contact two investors in the hopes of re-opening the coffee shop. And so, in 2008, L'Escalier was born.

Taking advantage of the apartment-style interior of the café, the owners of L’Escalier imbued each room with its own character and atmosphere. The "Dance Macabre" features white and black wallpaper; the "Skylight" is composed of only a table stuck against a wall and a plant, and the "Tea Room" is cozy and welcoming with its sofas and coffee tables.

The choice of décor was a gamble: The owners gave carte blanche to Jean Frédérique, a client and friend who studied theatre set design. He seems to have been a good choice. The café has been a hit in the neighbourhood because each room has its own special charm.

Can’t miss late-night eats in Montreal

Night-time is often synonymous with greasy food and cured meat, but those who prefer something more veggie can rely on l’Escalier, which offers a menu full of flavour until 3am, every day of the week. There’s grilled cheese sandwiches on sesame bread, nachos, salad dressings, tapas on organic bread, pasta (goat, vegetables or tofu) and sandwiches on whole grain sunflower seed bread.

At L’Escalier, a very calm and casual vibe compliments the multicultural music they supply, which often includes a good dose of jazz. The various rooms around the bar provide a friendly, welcoming ambiance. And with the soothing live tunes, delicious vegetarian food and affordable drinks, it all adds up to the promise of a really great night.
