Amid Vancouver's many glass condos and office towers, it's not often you see green ivy climbing up the side of a 1912 heritage building. Then again, Brix & Mortar isn’t your average eatery. First opened in 1999, the Yaletown dining room features an enchanting glass-covered courtyard with exposed brick walls, wooden beams and ivy-draped walls that makes patrons feel as though they might be in Florence, Quebec or New Orleans.

“My partner Patrick Mercer and I were a couple of waiters with grandiose ideas when we bought Brix (formally Farago) in 1999 with a shoestring renovation budget,” co-owner David Hannay recalls. Today, the award-winning restaurant is divided between two floors and two stunning patios. “The main difference between the two spaces is that the Hamilton room has butcher-block tables and it’s a little more laid back than the more upscale, yet still casual, Homer room,” David explains.

The stylish-yet-cozy vibe makes Brix & Mortar the perfect place for romantic dinner dates and intimate weddings. In fact, the restaurant hosted more than 100 weddings in 2016 alone. “My wife Jennifer and I met at the restaurant and she thought Brix & Mortar was a great wedding venue,” David says. “Jennifer loved it so much, our 2002 wedding was one of the first weddings in the courtyard.”

It has probably been 15 years since I have been here. They have a lovely courtyard at their Homer Street entrance and an outdoor patio on their Hamilton Street entrance. My friend and I tried their 3 course set menu and we both choose their squid, salmon and panna cotta option. The squid was lightly battered and moist, salmon is served med rare which I liked. I loved my cocktail, Big Flavours in Little China which is served in a takeout box. Fairly good wine selection by glass or bottle.

It appears my previous review was taken down by YP. Not sure why this happened. Regardless, I am posting again as a follow up to my deleted post. Went to Brix with my partner for our anniversary. The service was incredibly unprofessional with the hostess never looking at us as we spoke with her, to our server not acknowledging us after being seated for 10min. After posting my review, the manager asked for my email to 'entice me back.' I e-mailed and have yet to receive a response. tacky.

my lovely girl took me here for my birthday...

my lovely girl took me here for my birthday dinner and im glad she did because the food here was amazing (and i stress the word amazing). to start, we ordered this scallops and prawn/pork dish and all i have to say about the scallops are WOW.. it came with risotto and duck which was heavenly. one of the best i have ever ordered, i could have just come for this particular appetizer and ordered 4 of these to eat without anything else. for entrees, i had their seasonal fresh fish special which was also very tasty, the salmon was cooked perfectly which came with this potato and shrimp combo that could not have made the dish taste any better. my gf loved her pasta dish as well which was also very yummy since i got to try some of it. our waitress was friendly and polite to us throughout the entire evening.. a sweetheart just made the dining experience that much better. relative to other restaurants like this, the value of the food was reasonable given the proportions that were provided. the type of food is comparable to a place like seasons in the park minus the view (we did get a window seat here though) so you are getting food without sky high prices. the place has a cozy feeling to it and a 'historic' atmosphere: dimly lit with chandeliers and mirrors that look like they would belong in a castle... different yet creative. i liked it. i will be back here again for sure and i really hope the food will be just as good as the first time... hard to find a restaurant that consistently serves the same quality food but if this place does that, ill definitely be a regular customer here.
