Hop aficionado? Sour beer lover? Just thirsty? Check out this list of Vancouver's best craft breweries in East ("Yeast") Van.
After months of negotiations with the City for permits and on-going construction to their Adanac and Clark Street location, Steve Forsyth, former owner of Vancouver’s beloved Railway Club, opened Off the Rail Brewing. Using hops he’s grown himself and relying on his long history of beer appreciation and love of micro-brews, he’s seen pretty instant success. With the small tasting room constantly abuzz and the beer flying off the shelves, we’re eagerly awaiting liquor store sales as well. In the meantime, this is another great stop on the meandering brewery crawl in this beer-crazy ‘hood.
Conveniently located on the traffic-calmed Adanac bike lane, this small brewery makes up in flavour what it lacks in space. Try a flight of their frequently rotating kegs alongside perennial favourites like their Bomber IPA, Bitter and Pilsner, and you’ll be glad you left your car at home.
Making the sizeable leap from nano-brewery to micro-brewery in the fall of 2014, Powell Street Craft Brewery clearly had demand on its mind. The bigger space down the street near Clark means that at least five beers are always on tap, growler refills are streamlined and swift and, most notably, a tasting room is available for a more relaxed appreciation of their CBA-gold-winning Jalopy Pale Ale and any of their other rotating brews. A little bigger is sometimes a lot better.
Established in 1995, Storm is the oldest craft brewery in the hood, and paved the way on East Van’s gritty streets for the many friendly competitors they now call neighbours. Found on restaurant taps across the city, Storm also offers tours of their modest space and always has time to nerd out on beer knowledge.
Distinctive labels and seasonal recipes have made this brewery a home-grown favourite since it quietly opened in 2012. While easily available in BC liquor stores, their beer is arguably best enjoyed in their Triumph Street tasting room where passionate brewmasters will ply you with some serious deets on their craft.
Convinced we are all strange fellows, unique in our own ways, the original strange fellows behind this relatively new East Van brewery have crafted their business and their product on the idea that what unites us is this very strangeness. And an intense love for beer. Two brewers with loads of experience, the team behind Strange Fellows Brewing shares a commitment to crafting excellent beer in the old-world tradition, which translates to complex wits, strong Belgians and of course a West Coast-style pale ale as a nod to their beloved locale. Revel in oddness and quench your thirst.
