According to Instagram, Toronto is the sixth most popular place in the world to propose. Looks like Paris isn’t the only city of love. From flash mobs to picturesque sceneries, here are some romantic ways you can get down on one knee in #the6ix. [Image credit: iStock.com/mediaphotos]

5 romantic ways to propose in Toronto

1. Take a page out of the movies

If your honey really loves Audrey Hepburn’s early morning window shopping in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, consider this: A 2015 survey conducted by Weddingbells states that 29 per cent of engaged brides had picked out their engagement rings before the proposal. Rather than asking your girlfriend or boyfriend what kind of ring they want, why not have them choose their own in the most romantic way possible? Just like that infamous scene in Sweet Home Alabama, surprise your lover with a proposal at Tiffany & Co.’s luxurious location in Yorkville. It may take pulling a few strings, but imagine literally having breakfast at Tiffany’s, starting your day with a “will you marry me?” and then choosing an engagement ring together.

2. Have a magical picnic at High Park

Looking for an intimate, magical setting to get down on one knee? May we suggest a picnic at High Park during cherry blossom season? Usually in late April or early May, love is really in the air during these magnificent few weeks of floral bliss. To prep a chic setting, head over to Queen West lifestyle store Lavish and Squalor to shop picnic-equipped backpacks and Pendleton motor robe blankets. Since you can’t drink wine in High Park, you can opt instead for some Rise Kombucha, cold brew coffee or Village Juicery cold-pressed juices, also available at L&S. And if you don’t feel like prepping food, stop by Picnic’s takeout restaurant in Yorkville to grab some pre-packed salads, sandwiches and baked goods.

3. Reserve a private patio for two at Trattoria Nervosa

If you’re both fans of Italian food, then Trattoria Nervosa is the perfect place to pop the question. This Yorkville restaurant has a private balcony for two that’ll make your soon-to-be life partner feel super VIP (in 2013 in fact, Jay Z and Beyoncé were spotted dining here with their daughter, Blue Ivy). Enjoy the passers by of Yorkville’s posh neighbourhood, and get down on one knee between the cannoli and panna cotta. But take note: they only take reservations at noon and 6 pm.

4. Enjoy some R&R at the Thompson Hotel

The Thompson Hotel is one of the best destinations in the city for some major R&R. They have a gorgeous view of Toronto’s downtown cityscape and pretty much every nook and cranny of the 30,000 square foot hotel is worthy of a marriage proposal. You can propose with breakfast in bed or up top in the Rooftop Lounge with the CN Tower as your backdrop. If you and your soulmate are movie buffs, book the private screening room and play your favourite film. Or better yet, slide in a homemade video of you proposing on screen – your honey will love the thought you put into the special moment.

5. Propose during the most wonderful time of the year

Did you know that December is the most popular month in Canada to pop the question? And just sayin’, since it’s ranked as one of the top 10 holiday markets in the world, the Toronto Christmas Market at the Distillery District will make for one hell of a romantic backdrop. Get down on one knee as 18,000 lights bring a sparkle to the Christmas tree (and your proposal) during the grand opening. Or, go even bigger by arranging a flash mob with the help of proposal planning guru Crystal Adair-Benning. It could cost you anywhere from $1,500 to $5K, but the memories would be priceless.
