Caring for porcelain, ceramics and glassware

July 29, 2015

Porcelain, ceramics, and glassware are durable but easy to damage. If you handle, display and repair them carefully, they will have long lives. Here's how.

Caring for porcelain, ceramics and glassware

Use both hands when handling glass

  • Most damage to glassware and ceramics is the result of improper handling.
  • To prevent any mishaps, always use both hands when moving your pieces, and be sure to lift them from their strongest points.
  • Never hold ceramic or glass objects by their handles or spouts — especially if the object has been previously repaired.

The safe way to display

  • The best and safest way to display delicate porcelain and glass pieces is in a solid cabinet in a quiet area of your home.
  • Avoid spots where doors regularly slam or where there is a lot of foot traffic or playing.
  • It's also a good idea to cut pieces of felt or chamois to fit under the base of your breakable objects.
  • It will keep them steadier and protect the furniture underneath.

Use the right glue

  • Do not use white glues or fast-drying glues (like Super Glue) to repair broken glass objects; they will not bond well, and future damage may occur.
  • Instead, experts advise using a good, clear-drying epoxy.
  • Buying a high-quality one will help to avoid discolouring.
  • Apply the adhesive to all broken edges; remove any excess with a soft rag or cotton swab moistened with a little acetone.
  • Use masking tape or strapping tape to secure the pieces as they dry.

Do not heat ceramics

  • Antique ceramic dishes or bowls should not be heated beyond room temperature. Higher temperatures can cause any existing stains to darken.
  • Sudden changes in temperature of either extreme can also result in the formation of cracks in ceramics.
