Your goal is to create space for everything and know exactly where all your items are so you can retrieve them quickly and easily. Here are a few essential tips to packing our luggage properly.
From airline requirements to the weather at your destination, research is key to proper luggage planning. Find the strictest regulations on your itinerary, and adhere to those regulations. Knowing the regulations of your airlines and departure countries will reduce your chances of being delayed at the security checkpoint with bags that won't be accepted on board.
Choose the right carry-on and/or suitcase size for your journey. Starting a week or two before your trip, leave the suitcase open in your home. When you remember something you want to take on your trip, simply place it in the suitcase. Make lists of items you know you will need and place that list near your baggage. That way, if an emergency arises the evening before you depart, half of your packing is already complete.
A smartly stocked carry-on could eliminate the need for checked luggage altogether. If your checked bags are delayed or lost, you will rely on your carry-on. Be sure to include medications, a spare set of clothes, electronics and your travel documents. Liquid medications are generally exempt from the 100 ml rule, but travel-size containers of toiletries should follow the strictest standards you found while researching your itinerary.
Any item such as laptop computers, liquids and medicines could be subject to additional screening. Have these items in an easy-to-reach section of your bag to make your security check efficient.
Weight and space are the two most important standards you need to think about when you organize your luggage. Pack heavy items such as books or shoes at the bottom of a rolling bag (near the wheels). Keeping those heavy items at the bottom keeps the bag from toppling over.
To save time on your trip, organize clothing by outfits. Keep top, bottom, socks, underwear and accessories packed by outfits. You can also place each ensemble in a separate plastic bag that seals for efficient and water-resistant organization. Lastly, weigh your bag the night before you leave, or you might have to discard items at the airport to meet the weight requirements.
With careful planning, your well-organized luggage will help you spend more time enjoying your journey and less time searching for items in your suitcase.
