Meet the owner

Over four decades ago, Frank Krowicki launched Smuggler's Inn on Macleod Trail just south of Glenmore Trail Southeast. Open late, the steak house offered high-end meals in a cozy, comfortable setting. It was an instant hit.

While the Smuggler's Inn menu has evolved and the establishment now shares its building with three sister restaurants, Open Sesame, Bolero and Tango Bistro, its patrons have remained true. "We are still seeing people who have been coming here for 30 years," explains general manager Andrea Cintula. "We're seeing their children, and in some cases we're seeing their children." She estimates that three quarters of the restaurant's clientele are regulars. She also notes that these regulars come in all shapes and sizes, from the business crowd to retirees to the Sunday family dinner crowd.

Prime rib is definitely the star of the show at Smuggler's Inn, but the restaurant also serves New York cuts, filet mignon, rib eye and bison steak. The balance of the menu has something for everyone, from classic steakhouse fare such as baked garlic escargot appetizer to oven-roasted, herbed chicken, smoky beef ribs as well as seafood dishes such as halibut tarragon, which is a customer favourite.

A bloody good drink: Quintessential Caesar spots in Calgary

Are we sensing a theme? Alberta beef is beautifully complemented by a bold Caesar, so the drink is a mainstay of steakhouses around the city. A beloved grilled meat landmark on Macleod Trail, Smuggler’s kicks its Caesar up a notch by adding horseradish (by request) and tossing in a pickled asparagus spear.
