Meet the owner

Despite Vancouver’s unpredictable weather, there’s always a queue of people gathered outside the doors at Café Medina. Any day of the week, the acclaimed downtown restaurant brims with excited chatter, clinking mimosa glasses and the aroma of fine-ground espresso. “It’s my mandate to provide an enlightened dining experience,” says Robbie Kane, Medina’s experienced owner who cut his teeth in high-profile Toronto establishments before noticing a gap in Vancouver’s brunch market.

The first iteration of Medina opened in Crosstown in 2008. Drawn to the café’s eclectic brunch plates and classic Belgian waffles to go, Robbie’s clientele quickly outgrew the small café. Medina’s spacious new home opened in 2014 on nearby Richards Street.

It was at the former location that Robbie met the most important customer of his life. “A few weeks after we added our sign, a woman came in off the street saying her name was Medina,” Robbie recalls. She returned one month later and offered her table to someone else in line, sparking a conversation with the owner. One thing led to another, and “now I’m married to Medina,” Robbie says with a smile.

Hands down great food eats here but long waits and your entire party needs to be present or they will not seat you, fair enough. I have been a few times now and all the food is very good and you have to start with one of their wonderful waffles and share your topping with the rest of your table to enjoy the different flavours. Worth waiting in line for.

We had looked forward to dinner here for a long time and perhaps September was the wrong evening to try, especially with a concert at GM Place as well. Most of the items we had were OK, especially the mussels, but the portions were very small and my gf left hungry - and she is not especially large eaters! We were impressed with the Belgian beer selections though. For the prices, I was surprised that they charge $3 for each small portion of bread ordered - it is one of the few places in town not to include bread. The service was pretty standard - the waitress did not seem especially interested in us, and she wasn't too pretty so we didn't mind, but we did not wait an inordinately long time for our food.

On those early Saturday mornings following a late night out, head to Medina to cure the hangover blues and satisfy a craving for ribs. Located on Richards Street, Medina doesn’t mess around when it comes to their breakfast menu. The eggs, potato and barbecued ribs combo is a big favourite among carnivores, making it well worth the effort it took to roll out of bed.

Vancouver’s best weekday breakfast joints

Vancouver’s best weekday breakfast joints

Long line-ups are part of the experience at Medina Cafe, one of the city’s buzziest breakfast spots even after almost a decade in business and having moved into a bigger space in 2014. Regulars are devoted to the lavender lattes and Liege-style waffles. In its new home on Richards, Medina has a fuller menu with plenty of inventive, Moroccan inspired breakfast delights and a comprehensive list of cocktails. Dishes like the breakfast paella and a spicy sausage and vegetable tagine come in hearty portions, and are always worth the wait.
