Meet the owner

Owner Caitlin Zannoni wanted to create a community space that not only offered quality products but also excellent customer service. With more than 10 years of experience working in the restaurant industry—including a stint behind the counter at a major coffee chain in university—opening a coffee shop felt like the most logical next step.

Not knowing the first thing about starting a business, she enrolled with Canadian Youth Business (now Futurpreneur Canada) to learn more about applying for a loan, writing a business plan and what actually went in to make a business work in Canada. After six months of planning, she opened up The Tampered Press in March of 2010 in an unassuming storefront just across the street from Trinity Bellwoods park in Toronto’s west end. “Coffee shops are a slow growth business,” Caitlin says. “It took some time to build up a solid clientele of regulars.”

Over the years, both Caitlin and the business have grown and adapted to the needs of the community. “I had no idea how much I was going to enjoy coffee culture,” says Caitlin. “It’s more than just a job, it’s a lifestyle.”

The best cafés around Trinity Bellwoods Park

The best cafés around Trinity Bellwoods Park

Located across the street from the north entrance to the park (and conveniently, where the Trinity Bellwoods Famer’s Market takes place), The Tampered Press is a cozy, exposed brick hangout popular among local artists and writers. In the summer they offer a wide array of frozen drinks (iced coconut latte is a must-try) as well as scrumptious ice pops, grilled cheese and samosas. With plenty of communal tables and individual counter spaces, this is the place to go to escape the sun, and get some work done.

The best spots for gourmet popsicles in Toronto

The best spots for gourmet popsicles in Toronto

Known mostly as a hybrid café and community space with a mismatched interior and a rustic aesthetic, the Tampered Press also serves up a delicious range of iced offerings which includes seasonal gourmet ice pops that provide a cool respite from a sunny afternoon at Trinity Bellwoods (located right across the street). Favourite flavours include the blueberry mojito and the tart lemon cheesecake.

What she gets: A gourmet popsicle. Watermelon lemon mint ice pop anyone? This café drives toward creating healthy options for their Dundas West patrons, offering house-baked goods and sandwiches alongside a few guilty pleasures like affogatos (ice cream from Ed’s Real Scoop with a shot of espresso atop). In its bright and airy Crawford Street digs, The Tampered Press looks onto the north entry to Trinity Bellwoods, making it a perfect stop for a coffee, a quick lunch to go, or an icy treat.
